Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus casei is a lactic acid, gram-positive bacterium that is commonly found in many different environments including the human gut microbiome, and fermented foods such as cheese (1). It has several health benefits to humans due to its ability to produce lactic acid and other beneficial compounds.

One of the most notable health benefits of Lactobacillus casei is its ability to improve digestive health. As it produces lactic acid and other organic aids, the pH of the gut is lowered, which inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria (2). It also produces bacteriocins, which are microbial compounds that can help protect you against pathogenic bacteria (3). Additionally, Lactobacillus casei has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects. It is known to activate immune cells and promote the production of cytokines and other immune molecules, which can help to improve immune function and protect against infection (1).  Moreover, Lactobacillus casei has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer (4).

Lactobacillus casei has been extensively studied for its role in promoting a healthy intestinal microbiota. It is known to have several beneficial effects on the intestinal microbiota, including improving the balance of beneficial bacteria, reducing the growth of harmful bacteria, and promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids that provide energy to the cells lining the intestine. Additionally, studies have shown that Lactobacillus casei can enhance the immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion, further contributing to a healthy intestinal microbiota (1).

Studies have suggested that Lactobacillus casei may play a role in reducing inflammation in the body (6). When inflammation becomes chronic, it can contribute to various health issues such as heart disease, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Lactobacillus casei is thought to have anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, promoting the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and improving the integrity of the gut barrier (6). A study was conducted to investigate whether Lactobacillus casei could alleviate Crohn’s disease symptoms. The findings of the study suggest that live Lactobacillus casei can counteract the inflammatory effects of E. coli on Crohn’s disease (9). Lactobacillus casei supplements may therefore be useful for those with gastrointestinal diseases.
