Description

Lactobacillus brevis

Lactobacillus brevis is a lactic acid producing bacterium present in the normal gut microbiota of humans and is particularly abundant in the intestines, vagina, and faeces. It is commonly found on dairy farms in raw milk and in foods such as cheese, pickles, yoghurt, and sourdough bread (1). It has been extensively studied for its beneficial effects on human health including its ability to improve immunity, dental health, and gut health (2). Likewise, research suggests that Lactobacillus brevis may play a role in improving cognitive function and can potentially have a significant antioxidant activity (1,3).

Immunocompromised individuals, people with organ failure, and those with a dysfunctional gut barrier should consult their healthcare practitioner before using this product.

Epigenetics probiotic Lactobacillus brevis is produced in a vegan friendly and convenient delayed release capsule. Recommended daily dose is 1 serving per day taken after a meal, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. This product is not intended to be used as an alternative to a varied diet.

Lactobacillus brevis has been shown to have numerous benefits for immunity. One study found that Lactobacillus brevis reduced the incidence of influenza in 1089 elementary school children, with a particularly pronounced improvement in unvaccinated individuals. Additionally, in another study involving 60 volunteers, oral administration of live Lactobacillus brevis significantly increased the production of IFN-α, a key antiviral protein, but not in those who received heat-killed Lactobacillus brevis. The intake of Lactobacillus brevis was most beneficial in subjects with initially low levels of IFN-α production. Furthermore, this bacterium has been found to alleviate symptoms of influenza virus infection in mice and enhance cytotoxic activity of mouse splenocytes, which are immune cells involved in fighting infections. Additionally, Lactobacillus brevis has demonstrated antiviral activity towards herpes virus (HSV-2) and has been shown to inhibit HSV-2 multiplication, which can cause genital herpes. These findings suggest that Lactobacillus brevis has potential as an immune booster and antiviral agent (2).

In addition to its potential benefits for immunity, Lactobacillus brevis may also improve cognitive function when used in combination with other probiotics. A study on adults who consumed a fermented milk product daily found that this particular blend of probiotics enhanced brain activity in specific regions involved in mediating cognitive performance. This is thought to be due to the gut-brain connection, suggesting that the composition of bacteria in the gut can influence brain function and behaviour, especially cognitive performance. These findings provide evidence for the potential of Lactobacillus brevis as a probiotic strain that can positively impact brain health (1).

Lactobacillus brevis may also support dental health. Studies have shown that this probiotic improved oral pH, reduced salivary Streptococcus mutans, and reduced bleeding on probing in 191 school children, indicating its potential as a preventative measure against tooth decay. Furthermore, Lactobacillus brevis has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in both healthy individuals and those with periodontitis. In a study involving 8 healthy subjects and 21 patients with periodontitis, this bacterium brought about the total disappearance or amelioration of clinical symptoms. In another study on 34 healthy adults, Lactobacillus brevis showed oral anti-inflammatory properties, possibly by preventing nitric oxide synthesis. In mice with periodontitis, this bacterium inhibited periodontal inflammation, significantly decreased bone loss, and lowered the count of anaerobic bacteria, indicating its potential as a treatment for periodontal disease. These findings suggest that Lactobacillus brevis may be a beneficial addition to oral health interventions, either as a preventative measure or as a treatment option for periodontal disease. Further research is needed to determine the optimal dosage and duration of Lactobacillus brevis supplementation for optimal dental health benefits (2).

Lactobacillus brevis is generally considered safe however, caution is advised when taking probiotics containing Lactobacillus brevis in patients with organ failure, compromised immune systems, or impaired gut function. If this applies to you, please consult your healthcare practitioner before use (2).
