The health benefits of Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace element commonly found in red meat, poultry, and fish. It is necessary in small amounts for human health, growth, and sense of taste. The body doesn’t store excess zinc, so it must be obtained from the diet.

Zinc is required for many processes in the body such as, immune function, DNA synthesis, wound healing, gene expression, protein synthesis and growth and development [1].

Some of the health benefits of taking a Zinc supplement include:

Decreased inflammation – Oxidative stress leads to chronic inflammation, a contributing factor in a wide array of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, cancer and mental decline. Zinc decreases oxidative stress and reduces levels of certain inflammatory proteins in your body [2]. In a 2010 study of 40 older adults, those who took 45 mg of zinc per day experienced greater reductions in inflammatory markers than a placebo group [3].

Boosts the immune system – Because zinc is necessary for immune cell function and cell signalling, a deficiency can lead to a weakened immune response. A recent review of seven studies demonstrated that 80–92 mg per day of zinc may reduce the length of the common cold by up to 33% [4].

May help treat acne – Studies suggest that both topical and oral zinc treatments can effectively treat acne by reducing inflammation, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and suppressing oily gland activity [5]. Studies suggest that people with acne tend to have lower levels of zinc. Therefore, taking a zinc supplement may help reduce some symptoms [6].

Accelerates wound healing – Zinc is commonly used in hospitals as a treatment for burns, certain ulcers and other skin injuries. Zinc is necessary for wound healing as it plays critical roles in collagen synthesis, immune function and inflammatory response. In a 12-week study in 60 people with diabetic foot ulcers, those treated with 200 mg of zinc per day experienced significant reductions in ulcer size compared to a placebo group [7].

Epigenetics do a range of Zinc products in both liquid and capsules. Our Zinc 100ml is a great product for those who don’t like to take capsules.
