A vitamin is an organic compound required by an organism as a vital nutrient in limited amounts. An organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and on the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animals, and vitamin D is required in the human diet at certain times. For us in the UK the level of UV in the sunshine will be so low as to not be able to convert cholesterol in the skin to cholecalciferol (Vitamin D). from the 21st September to 21st March this process of endogenously producing Vitamin D is non-active.


Vitamins and their respective co-enzymes are divided into those that are water soluble being the vitamin B group and Vitamin C and those that are fat soluble - Vitamin A, D, E and K.

Generally vitamins act as:

  • Co-Enzymes precursors in specific enzyme pathways Co-Enzymes are so called activated vitamins. 22% of known enzymes require coenzymes to function.  Most co-enzymes are members of the Vitamin B group with the addition of alpha Lipoic Acid, SAM, Vitamin C and Co-Enzymes Q10.
  • Antioxidants
  • Co-factors with blood clotting
  • Part of cell membranes


Epigenetics offers a wide range of liquid and encapsulated  water soluble vitamins in both their basic structure as well as in their activated co-enzyme  forms where applicable. Vitamin E is supplied in soft gel capsules. Vitamin A is supplied as 30ml dropper bottles of the concentrated vitamin in black cumin seed oil in order to aid the body to activate retinol into retinal and retinoid acid. Vitamin D3 is similarly supplied in 30ml dropper bottles of the concentrated vitamin in black cumin seed oil to enhance the hydroxylation  of Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) into the 25-OH Cholecalciferol storage form and then onto the 1,25 OH Cholecalciferol and 24,25 OH Cholecalciferol active forms.

Research has shown that the human body can store up to 3 month’s worth of Vitamin so by Christmas time it’s good to be thinking of a winter holiday below 30° latitude. The predominant waveband in the winter sunlight is blue and thus very little violet enters our skin or eyes. Hence the so called winter BLUES. You can measure whether you are synthesising Vitamin D by the length of your shadow. When your shadow is shorter than yourself you are synthesising. When it is longer you are not.

All B vitamins when activated are important coenzymes in the production of ATP within the mitochondria. Citric acid is a natural allosteric effector of the enzymes involved with ATP production within the mitochondria. An allosteric effector is a substance that influences enzyme activity by binding to a specific site of an enzyme molecule. This site, called an allosteric site, is not a part of the active catalytic site, but it changes the shape of the catalytic site so the later can allow more substrate in known as allosteric activation.

Citric acid is also thought to increase the bioavailability of the straight B vitamins and may also be required for the conversion of  B vitamins into their coenzyme forms.
